Motion Picture Soundtrack.2
it was just another desirable night hunger for instrumental post rock tunes and coincidently, motion picture soundtrack.2 was up on that night. phew. it soothed me smooth. by the way, taking a couple of seconds to thank the ones whose behind this gig, and those who had supported it since, the organizer, the venue provider, the bands, the partipating crews, the visual installation team. great work done. we malaysians need such enthusiasts like that to keep it coming. more events. more joy. more fun. more emotic moments to drown post rock in.
motion picture soundtrack.2 happened on 15 november 2007 at laundry bar, the curve.
featured bands for the night were amateur takes control from singapore, deepset and kuala lumpur post-harmonic quintet (klphq), both bands are from malaysia. visual installation and projection was from fairuz sulaiman and hummingbird collective. on the decks during intermissions was ronnie khoo of the furniture.
right now we get things started with the review of this wondrous event.

upon arrival, i thought it was another unsupported event with minimal attendance. unlikely it's true, cos' the place was filled moments after the announcer kicked off the gig with the first act from the singaporeans, amateur takes control. a bunch of 17 year olds striving forward to accomplish their dream, spreading post rock to the world, creating a statement to the people, 'we are amateurs, but it doesn't mean we can't rock the world'...amazing creatures i'd say. however they aren't quite there yet when it comes to preparing for the show, too slow, too messed up, and lots of precious time wasted. my first view of atc, 'dude, get off stage...just another bunch of youngsters trying to proof they can rock'. i was wrong, and i apologize for bringing that judgement into my mind. when the first key was played, i was stunned. i was amazed, and i was impressed. beautiful music playing with your emotional and gets you moving to the frequency wave. being inspired by notable post rockers like explosions in the sky, mogwai and tristeza, they automatically transformed their music combining each and every of their inspired musicians and formed into one elegant sound, the amateur takes control sound. both guitarists had good skills in managing their own instrument, and was impresssed both knows the keyboard well too. the drummer did his thing, but was slightly cool. the bassist cheated me with his nerdy look. he's indeed one wonderful guy. they've got an album available for purchase, so if you're curious to know how good are they, do check them out. oh yea, towards the ending, there was this friend of theirs doing some gigantic screams. dude, small size, big voice. loving it.
even longer intermission after atc was done. deepset was next up and the setting up was pretty darn long. i managed to go to the loo, get a beer at the bar, and sneak back right through where i belong earlier, not quite. i can tell half of the crowd were there cos' of deepset. they were cheering and supporting for them during their setup session. aaaannyyway. deepset is something darker, heavier, depressing. it really plays with your emotions. deep effects. sounds like japan's mono. both guitarists sat down most of the time throughout the gig. gently figuring out the best way to molest their instrument. feeling them. touching them. playing them. a slumber bassist on the run, yet, he knows his stuff. keep the bassline running. the drummer got some mad skills. the snare sounded pretty. sweet sound. to be frank, i didn't realize we have so many talents in malaysia until then. nice music. nice sound. it touched me. i love deepset. that's final. towards the end, i was looking for their cd to purchase, but their representative said it was sold out. pretty darn quick eh? guess i'll have to hunt it somewhere else.
now now...it's time to flash the crew behind those magnificent visual effects. fairuz sulaiman and hummingbird collective on their job. aren't they beautiful? it totally matched the mood.
ok! now the last act for the night. klphq! however, i think this round wasn't that impressive compared to the last shows i watched. i guess it must be the new lineups and their still getting comfy with one another. it's always on my mind, that klphq is the kl version of explosions in the sky, or maybe to one extent, godspeed you! black emperor. klphq uses lots of computer effects, as you can see below the guitarist with his mac. loads of voice samples, noise feedbacks. loads of em'. the last time i remember, it was the nicest piece i ever heard from a malaysian band. tonight wasn't that fun. and i could see that the lead guitarist was kinda annoyed, god knows what it is. klphq will be heading into studio to record their album soon. stay tuned.
overall, the gig was fantastic and it's hasn't gone to a waste like other gigs i been to. some were really a waste of time. so! here's some sites to go to if you wanna check these bands out.
.
stay tune for more reviews on malaysia's local music scene from...
