Converse Japan May 2010 Release

May 2010 sees a smaller bulk release compared to last month's larger scale. However, the Japan team of Converse is not ready losing attractiveness to their everlasting records.

Chuck Taylor revives the one color concept - all the way from the upper to the eyelets to the sole. They've got the hi and low cut, both in white and red.

The Jack Purcell division decided to give their slim version a little more boost this month by introducing the gingham texture on it.

One Star seems a little different than usual, with the awkward mash up color on this pair - white upper, white star, blue sole and red lining. Not feeling it.

Everything mentioned above will release throughout May 2010. Hunt em' down if you fancy any of them.

Nina Nastasia - Outlaster

American singer-songwriter Nina Nastasia unveils her forthcoming sixth album titled Outlaster, to release on June 7 via FatCat Records.

Recorded once more with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago, Nina engaged Los Angeles musician and arranger Paul Bryan (whose collaborative credits include Aimee Mann, Grant Lee Phillips and others, and who’s worked as an instrumentalist with Allen Toussaint, Mavis Staples, Lucinda Willams, and many more) to adapt her songs into a score for a small orchestra. Then Nina and her long-time companion / collaborator Kennan Gudjonsson assembled string and woodwind quartets, finding the perfect complement with drummer Jay Bellerose (of Nina’s critically acclaimed albums ‘The Blackened Air’ and ‘On Leaving’) and Chicago guitarist Jeff Parker (Tortoise).

The opening track from the new album, ‘Cry, Cry, Baby’ serves as both a neat re-introduction to Nina’s work and in particular, to the sumptuous new sound of the album – a lush, orchestrated sophistication that, with no loss of distinction or economy, transcends the traditional reach of her famed spareness.

The third FatCat album to bear the name of San Francisco-based artist David Karsten Daniels, although it is an entirely different prospect to his previous releases in many ways. A collaboration with Richmond, Virginia-based 9-piece avant-jazz collective Fight the Big Bull, ‘I Mean To Live Here Still’ is the product of two decidedly individual, but musically (and geographically) distant sets of musicians.

10.Deep x Adidas Stan Smith Mid 'Raw Dogs'

10.Deep and Adidas presents a Stan Smith Mid given the name Raw Dogs.

Made of premium suede, the 10.Deep logo can be seen on the inner side of the upper and the usual Stan Smith branding seem similar.

Press release:

When it comes to the Stan Smith there is no questioning the popularity and overall impact the model has had since it was first released by adidas in 1965. Getting given the treatment by a slew of collaborators over the last decade has meant a number of make-ups of the Stan Smith have been available, with varying degrees of impact.

The Stan Smith Mid though, hasn't born the brunt of attention like its lower cut sibling, leaving room for some killer variations on the collaboration front. This joint effort, named ‘Raw Dogs’ sees OG New York based street-wear brand 10.Deep sprinkle some of their style on the Stan Smith Mid to produce a version worthy of both brand's combined heritage. The name plays off the rawhide laces and graphical monster mouth sock-liner while taking inspiration from the ongoing series of sticker attack tees from 10.Deep.

The upper is constructed from a premium suede in a muted Iron and Chrome colourway that reflects the 10.Deep motto - 'forget everyone and listen to yourself' - a motto that is reflected in further features including an embroidered 10.Deep and adidas tongue tag and an oversized embossed 10.Deep logo on the medial side of each upper.

Finished with an embossed combination 10.Deep and Trefoil logo on the heel-tab, the minimal, well thought out branding is the ideal accompaniment to the matching design aesthetic of the Stan Smith.

Proenza Schouler Spring/Summer 2010 Mini Bags

Proenza Schouler, we always had good impression on the products coming from the label as the possession of characteristic features in terms of design and identity of each item seem sufficient to make 'outstanding' look tiny.

For this Spring/Summer 2010, the label co-owned by designers Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough, have introduced a series of mini bags for ladies, goes pretty grand for evening cocktail sessions.

Probably too costly for the average market, but we thought the designs alone can keep you awake for nights thinking about it.

Materials are kept as premium as it could - soft leather suede, durable metal chains and buckles.

Elogy - One

California-based Elogy is set to release its debut album One on July 6. With no label attached currently, the self-released album is a product of a half-decade long process of evolution and development, “One” showcases a band that has taken its time to perfect and hone its sound. With sweeping melodies, well thought out synth lines, and driving vocals, Elogy has recorded an album that is distinctly new, but that still evokes contemporaries like Coldplay, Muse, or Thirty Seconds To Mars.

Based in Orange County, California, the members of Elogy came together 4 years ago under the leadership of Derek Cannavo. Transforming an old warehouse space into a fully functional, state of the art studio, Elogy began to develop their sound and their organization from scratch. Using their classical training as a foundation, the band quickly amassed a large catalogue of songs, and as they brought their music to a live setting, their sound began to evolve as well. Now, after almost half a decade, Elogy is pleased to finally be releasing its debut album, an album that is founded on classical training and solid musicianship but that is far from traditional.

With their debut release behind them, Elogy is poised and ready to enter the next phase of their career and expose their music to new fans across the country. With a full tour of California planned for this summer, and a National tour in the works, the members of Elogy are excited to take the US by storm, and continue their development as a band and as musicians.

Stornoway - Beachcomber's Windowsill

British alternative band Stornoway announced the release of their debut album titled Beachcomber's Windowsill with their newly-signed label 4AD, scheduled to May 24 release.

'I Saw You Blink' is evidence of the band's rich tapestry of pop melodies, embroidered with the band's crystalline, four-part harmonies. Brian Briggs, Stornoway's lead singer and songwriter, shows an almost effortless ability to segue deft lyrics that are narrative masterpieces with artful pop stylings. His bandmates; Jonathan Ouin (keys/banjo/electric guitar/cello), Rob Steadman (drums) and Oliver Steadman (bass / electric guitar) are all party to further embellishing this traditionally simple love song into a pop classic in-waiting. Perhaps because of their scientific backgrounds, all four of the band delight in experimenting with unusual instrumentation and production methods and in 'I Saw You Blink', the song's title is percussively transmitted via morse code, within the recording, using a güiro (the notched gourd commonly found in Latin American rhythm sections).

The new album will officially release on May 10 through 4AD.

High Violet is the quintet's first full length release since 2007's Boxer. Featuring 11 new tracks, recorded in the band's Brooklyn's studio, the album was mixed and produced along with Peter Katis.

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Before Today

LA-based avant garde musician Ariel Pink and his band Haunted Graffiti are scheduled to release a new album titled Before Today, their debut album since the tenure with 4AD.

Before Today comprise of twelve new tracks, including the infectious single recently unveiled Round and Round (can be heard on 4AD).

Ariel Pink's forthcoming album will hit stores on June 8.

Six months in the making, Before Today was recorded in part in Encino at the House of Blues with Sunny Levine and Rik Pekkonen as well as at the band's home studios. The result is a beguiling mix of glam rock, West Coast funk and Merseybeat harmonies with a high-production sheen; a contrast to the corroded bedroom recordings that have fomented a fervent cult following over the past decade.

The outfit, now consisting reclusive pop surrealist Ariel Pink (vocals) alongside Tim Koh (bass/vocals), Kenny Gilmore (guitar/vocals) and Aaron Sperske (drums/vocals).
