The Mountain Goats - All Eternals Deck

The Mountain Goats have confirmed the March 29 release of 'All Eternals Deck,' their debut album for Merge Records. As with their last album, 'The Life of the World To Come,' the group treated the recording sessions as commando raids on several studios with a few different producers: four songs at North Carolina's Fidelitorium with John Congleton; one at Q Division in Boston with Brandon Eggleston; four at Brooklyn's Mission Sound with Scott Solter; and four at Mana Recording Studios in Florida, with former Morbid Angel guitarist and current Hate Eternal helmsman Erik Rutan.

Describing the album, Darnielle writes, "If you have ever watched say a 70s occult-scare movie where one of the scenes involves a few people visiting a storefront fortune teller, getting their cards read, and then trying to feel super-hopeful about their predicted outcome when what they're visibly actually feeling is dread, then you have a pretty decent idea of what the album is all about." He elaborates, "Other possible points of reference include 'Burnt Offerings,' 'Go Ask Alice,' and that one scene in 'The Warriors' where they're on the train and the sun's coming up and they're safe but you know the scars are permanent now."

DeVotchKa Announce 100 Lovers

Denver, US based group DeVotchKa is set to release their new album “100 Lovers” via Anti-Records on February 28. For this, their fifth record, the band again headed to the vastness of the Arizona desert with producer Craig Schumacher (Calexico, Neko Case). The resulting work is as epic as the landscape in which it was recorded, the 15 new songs offering an emotionally charged sonic expansiveness while retaining all the heartfelt romance and celebratory energy for which the group is known. The record features guest percussions from Mauro Refosco of Thom York’s band Atoms For Peace and members of Calexico.

DeVotchKa recently took their celebrated live act across the globe, delivering spirited performances to audiences in places such as Istanbul, Belgium, and Poland. In Paris the band opened for Muse playing to massive crowds of 90,000. “To connect with a crowd of strangers in strange lands with your music is really a life altering experience,” singer Nick Urata explains. “When you are standing naked up there, in the clutches of an attention challenged audience, you find out immediately what works. And we wanted to capture some semblance of that knowledge on tape. And so we marched into the studio battle scarred but inspired - and this is where we ended up.”

As much as the touring, it has also been DeVotchKa – and front man Nick Urata’s, cinematic work which has informed their new album. Beginning with a Grammy nominated soundtrack for Little Miss Sunshine, Urata, who The Hollywood Reporter named one of the top 10 up-and-coming film composers, has created evocative soundscapes for a growing list of films including I Love You Phillip Morris starring Jim Carrey, The Joneses starring Demi Moore and David Duchovny, and many more.

The influence of this film work can be heard on “100 Lovers” opening track “The Alley” which begins with melancholy strings before swelling into a powerful and reflective ballad featuring Nick Urata’s otherworldly tenor crooning. It’s a style that has been difficult to describe, with journalists listing an assortment of disparate genres including Eastern European folk, Germanic polka, Mariachi rock - in a noble attempt to capture the band’s unique sound.

“We always hoped with this band to not get pinned down by genres, but everyone probably says that,” Urata offers. “My ideal way someone would describe us would be romantic, exotic or hopefully just plain good.”

Kings of Leon 'Pyro'

The unmistakable Kings of Leon recently received two Grammy nominations for their first single Radioactive, from their latest album Come Around Sundown. They were nominated for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group.

Anti- Signs Sean Rowe, Magic Release on February

Anti- Records is thrilled to announce the signing of an exciting new artist: singer- songwriter Sean Rowe, and the release of his Anti- debut Magic, due out on February 21, 2011.

In the tradition of Leonard Cohen and Van Morrison, Rowe utilizes his extraordinarily soulful baritone, along with a poet's skill, to sketch a world where man and nature lie down uneasily side by side. Disconnected images flicker past in Rowe's songs like the random neon of a city street, or the trees down a country lane; on the song "Jonathan" Rowe offers burning cars - "I lit the dash, I took my sunglasses off, I like to see the fucker glow" - alongside moments of haunting innocence - "Remember after school at the Skylar park, trading in our stories for the dark."

Then like a conjurer he makes these disconnected images come together, reminding us of all that we have forgotten, our place in the natural world. As Rowe explains, "A song like ‘Jonathan' is pretty dark stuff but it's also about trying to connect, trying to grab people. I'm not just writing for myself."


An avid naturalist, Rowe derives inspiration from his own wilderness experiences along with the writings of transcendentalists like Henry David Thoreau. "I love the simplicity and harmony of the natural world. I think it's something we have lost touch with. But it's hard to write songs about nature without sounding hokey. It's better to go out and experience it first-hand. I do use it for imagery because it has an incredible power, just like I use religious imagery even though I'm not particularly religious. For me it's more about imagery and emotion and not necessarily creating a straight forward narrative."

Stussy x Fred Perry 'Empire Mesh'

The first of the two sneakers created for the Stussy x Fred Perry collaboration project, Empire Mesh spots the open concept with the choice of mastering the mesh style on the upper for maximum breeze. Available in white and black, seems like a suede-based sneaker.

The other style is known as the Byron Cuff Boot, haven't heard when exactly it be out, however, most likely it would it early 2011.
